Gourmet deli trail, Silo’s and Street art!

Come along for 3 beautiful days, full with amazing art and history!

Day One.

Departing home this morning we make our way to Nagambie where we board the Goulburn Explorer for our cruise and morning tea. We will take a visit to Mitchelton winery and the Ministry of Chocolate – one of Australia’s most beautiful and historic wineries. We will be enjoying lunch today at the Nagambie Rowing Club on the shores of Lake Nagambie, before re-joining our coach to Wangaratta. This will be home for the next two nights.

Day Two.

After breakfast, we board the coach and head to Benalla. On arrival we are joined on the coach by a local expert for a tour of the city’s famous street art – artists from around the world were bought together to paint murals on bare walls, some are over three stories high!

Just up the road is Glenrowan, scene of the Kelly Gang’s last stand. We’ll visit Kate’s Cottage (named after Ned’s sister) and witness the events that led to the capture of the Kelly Gang at Kelly Land at the Glenrowan Tourist Centre. With lunch at the local hotel. After lunch we make our way to the most talked about in art in the region, the painted silo’s. This afternoon we’re off to do a little silo spotting of our own. Not far from Benalla is our first silo – the Goorambat silo – a barking owl, which is critically endangered. In Devenish, see Cam Scale’s artwork representing the changing role of the women in the military – a First World War nurse and a modern-day combat medic. Finally, Tungamah to see a celebration of the brolgas and a kookaburra. The Tungamah silo is a privately-owned silo of the Cooper family and the artist from Broome Sobrane. Each silo has a different artist and a different story!

Day Three.

This morning we head to the Winton Wetlands. The hundreds of Indigenous scar trees and tool scatters throughout the site indicate its importance to Indigenous people who called it ‘Mokoan’. Recorded history tells us that at times, many hundreds of Aboriginal people met at this site. The mid-19th century saw the enforced removal of its Indigenous owners, establishment of the huge ‘Mokoan Squatters Run’ and then its division into smaller farms. The site is home to several birds of prey which are attracted by the many small birds, reptiles and mammals that inhabit the area. These include the White-bellied Sea eagles, wedge tailed eagle, spotted harriers and peregrine falcons. Kits, waterfowl and kestrels are also common, as are well-known birds like ducks and cormorants. The site is also home to many snakes and other reptiles including goannas, bearded dragons, bluetongue lizards and smaller skinks.

During our tour around this amazing area we will stop at the Mokoan Hub and Café for a cooked lunch. The café using local ingredients and is sure to impress! The landscape art in the Winton Wetlands helps visitors understand the site and connect with the stories. Artist interpretations of the site enhance the experience, whether the add colour and a sense of whimsy like the fish painting on Boggy Bridge Road by a local artist Tim Bowtell or deal with more serious subject matter like the three magnificent portraits of local Country Fire Authority (CFA volunteers) on the tank on the corner of Winton North and Boggy Bridge Road) artists, Guido Van Helten. Water gallery at Ashmeads Swamp. Other pieces include the Hilda Bain portrait and the Gallery Kailea Turtle sculpture at the Lunette. The Winton Wetlands Reserve is 8,750Ha that comprises 3,800Ha of wetlands surrounded by predominantly river red gum and grassy box woodlands and grazing lands.  Mid-afternoon we will board the coach for our trip home.
